Cross-Disciplinary Programs

The College of Fine Arts encourages critical inquiry and creative production across disciplines, fields and boundaries of any kind. One way we do that is through programs and initiatives that bring together creative, passionate people from across Carnegie Mellon — and beyond — to push forward new modes of creative expression and storytelling for our modern age.

Explore the work happening in the BXA Intercollege Degree Programs, the Miller Institute for Contemporary Art  and the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry and learn how your support makes this important work possible.

Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry

The Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry is the research laboratory of the College of Fine Arts, dedicated to the support of atypical, anti-disciplinary and inter-institutional research at the intersections of the arts, sciences, technology and culture. The STUDIO serves as a flexible kitchen for new modes of arts research, development and presentation.

The STUDIO supports emerging artists — including CFA faculty, staff, students and artists-in-residence — who explore the possibilities of new media and new culture, including virtual and augmented reality, interactive robotics, generative arts, playable art, biological art, tactical media, experimental environments and other forms of cultural instigation.

The STUDIO is one of the oldest active centers for interdisciplinary arts research in the United States. Since its founding in 1989, the STUDIO has operated as “a transmitter of experimental ideas,” “an incubator for linking us to the future” and “as a development site for activities on the edge — a cultural ‘free zone’ where the unnameable can be nurtured.” Your support will allow the STUDIO to advance the arts-research of innovative students and faculty who work at the leading edge of the recently possible.

Together, we can support:

  • Creative Arts Residencies
  • Extracurricular Workshops
  • Post-Baccalaureate Fellowships
  • Experimental Arts R&D Funds
